Crete, Greece's largest island, is a mountainous island with several peaks above 2000m. In the east of Crete, the Lasithi plateau rises to an altitude of 800m. Inhabited since about 6500 BC, Crete is the place of the first advanced civilization in Europe, the Minoan that rose to power around 3000 BC. Knossos was the centre of Minoan power and one of its kings, King Minos, is still known today. Preveli beach and lagoon is located at the mouth of the Kourtaliótiko gorge on the south side of Crete. Behind the beach is an extensive grove with palm trees.
